Chapter 1
~1 min read
The clock struck midnight as Clara Finch turned the old brass key in the library door.
The Midnight Library was her pride and joy — a cozy bookstore that officially opened only after sunset. Soft golden lamps glowed between towering wooden shelves, and the air always smelled of old paper, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon from the small tea station in the corner.
Clara adjusted her oversized cardigan and smiled. This was her favorite time of night.
Then came the knock.
Three sharp raps on the front door. Odd. She rarely had customers this early.
She opened the door to find Mr. Reginald Hawthorne — the famous mystery author — standing on the doorstep, looking pale and nervous.
“Miss Finch,” he whispered urgently, “I need your help. Someone is trying to kill me.”
Clara blinked. “In my library?”
Before he could answer, Hawthorne clutched his chest, staggered forward, and collapsed between the Mystery and Thriller sections.
Clara rushed to his side. A small silver dagger was buried in his back, and a torn piece of paper was clutched in his hand. On it, written in elegant ink, was a single line:
“The butler did it… or did he?”
Clara’s heart raced. This wasn’t just a murder.
It was a message — hidden inside one of the oldest tropes in literature.
She gently closed the famous author’s eyes and stood up, determination settling over her.
“Alright,” she whispered to the silent bookshelves. “Let’s solve this the only way we know how.”
With a deep breath, Clara Finch stepped over the body and began pulling classic mystery novels from the shelves.
The Midnight Library had a new mystery to solve.
