Chapter 1
Travis watched Mia’s expression shift from disappointment to determination. It was as though a switch had been flipped inside her, awakening a resolve he both admired and feared. She tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and squared her shoulders.
“Fine,” she said with a shrug that seemed far too casual for the situation. “I’ll figure it out on my own.”
He wondered what, exactly, she planned to do. Mia had always possessed a stubborn streak, but this felt different—more intense. Travis knew better than to underestimate her, yet the thought of whatever she might rush into next made him uneasy.
“Mia, wait,” he called, hoping to draw her back from the edge of whatever impulsive plan was forming in her mind. “You know I didn’t mean it like that. I just—” He struggled to find words that would not push her farther away. “I just want to make sure you’re safe.”
She paused. Her gaze softened, and for a moment, Travis thought he had reached her. Then she shook her head, a trace of sadness in her smile.
“I know, Travis. But sometimes you have to do things on your own, you know?”
He nodded slowly, understanding her need for independence yet feeling helpless. As much as he wanted to support her, he knew that sometimes the best way to help someone was to give them the space they needed.
“Just promise me you’ll be careful,” he said. “Whatever you’re planning, you don’t have to face it alone. Even if I can’t be part of it, I’m here if you need help.”
“Okay,” Mia replied, though Travis could not tell whether she was making a promise or merely trying to ease his concern.
She turned away. Her footsteps faded as she walked down the hall, leaving him standing there with a knot of anxiety tightening in his chest.
He watched until she disappeared around the corner, then released a heavy sigh. He had known Mia since they were children, and one of the things he admired most about her was her indomitable spirit. At that moment, however, it worried him more than it reassured him.
“Trouble in paradise?”
The voice behind him made him jump. He turned and saw Kyle leaning against the lockers, a smirk playing on his lips.
“Not really,” Travis replied, trying to sound casual, though he doubted he succeeded. He did not know Kyle well; they moved in different circles. In any case, he had no desire to explain what had happened.
“Looked intense,” Kyle said, glancing in the direction Mia had gone. “Is she all right?”
Travis hesitated, uncertain how much he should reveal. “Yeah, she’s fine. It’s just… you know, stuff.”
Kyle raised an eyebrow but, thankfully, did not press him. “Well, if you need a distraction, a group of us are hanging out at the park later. Just something to keep in mind.”
“Thanks. I’ll think about it,” Travis said. He appreciated the invitation, even though he was not in the mood to socialise.
Kyle nodded, pushed himself away from the lockers, and sauntered down the hall with the easy confidence he always seemed to carry. Travis watched him leave before turning back to his locker. He gathered his books mechanically, trying to shake the unease that lingered after his conversation with Mia.
The rest of the day passed in a blur. Classes came and went, each seeming to last an eternity as Travis struggled to concentrate. His thoughts kept returning to Mia: what she was planning, whether she was truly all right, and whether he had done the right thing.
When the final bell released the students, Travis lingered beside his locker longer than usual. He had a little time before work, although he doubted his manager would object if he arrived late, given how much overtime he had worked recently.
He considered texting Mia to check on her, but he did not want to seem overbearing or make her feel watched. In the end, he chose a brief message:
I hope everything’s okay. Let me know if you need anything.
It was the most he could do without overstepping.
After slipping his phone back into his pocket, he closed his locker and made his way towards the exit. The afternoon sun felt warm against his skin. For a moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the simple pleasure of fresh air and the distant chatter of students making plans for the evening.
As he reached the edge of the school grounds, he heard someone calling his name. He turned and saw Lily, a friend from his history class, waving as she hurried to catch up with him.
“Hey, Travis!” she called with a bright smile. “Are you heading to work?”
“Yeah, in a little while,” he replied. “Why? What’s up?”
Lily shrugged as she fell into step beside him. “I thought I’d see if you wanted some company for part of the walk. It’s been a while since we caught up.”
After the morning he had endured, Travis welcomed the company. “Sure. That sounds good. How are things with you?”
“Same old, same old,” Lily said with a laugh. “But did you hear about the new café that opened downtown? Apparently, it has the best doughnuts in the city.”
“I hadn’t heard,” Travis admitted, his interest stirring despite himself. “Maybe I’ll have to try it sometime.”
“Definitely. We should all go—me, you, and Mia.” Lily’s eyes sparkled with mischief. “I’m sure she’d love it.”
He smiled at her enthusiasm, although the mention of Mia brought a fresh wave of concern. “Yeah, she’d probably enjoy that. I’ll mention it to her.”
They continued walking and talking, their conversation drifting from school to films and everything in between. By the time they reached the turning where they would part ways, Travis felt a little lighter. Some of the tension had left his shoulders.
“Thanks for the company, Lily,” he said as they stopped. "It was good to catch up.”
“Anytime,” she replied, giving him a friendly wave. “Don't be a stranger.”
Travis watched her leave before continuing towards work. The familiar route offered a sense of routine that he found unexpectedly comforting. He arrived just in time for his shift, greeted by the store’s usual bustle as he stepped inside.
The hours passed more quickly than he expected. The demands of work kept his mind occupied, and as evening gave way to night, he found himself grateful for the distraction. Even so, concern for Mia remained at the back of his mind like a shadow.
When his shift finally ended, he checked his phone again, hoping for a reply. There was still nothing from Mia.
He sighed, tucked the phone into his pocket, and headed home. The streets were quieter now as the city settled into its nighttime rhythm.
When he reached the house, the familiar creak of the front door and the comforting aroma of dinner welcomed him. His mother was in the kitchen. She looked up and smiled as he entered.
“Hello, sweetheart. How was your day?” she asked, setting a plate on the table for him.
“It was all right,” Travis replied, trying to keep his voice casual. “Work was busy.”
“Did anything interesting happen?” she asked as she poured herself a cup of tea and joined him at the table.
Travis hesitated, wondering how much to share. “Nothing unusual. I spent some time with Lily, and we caught up a little. It was nice.”
His mother nodded, as if sensing that he was leaving something unsaid. “I'm glad you have friends like her. It’s important to have people you can talk to.”
“Yeah,” he agreed, picking at his food. He wanted to tell her about Mia and the worry he carried, but he did not know how to begin without making the situation sound worse than it was.
Noticing his reluctance, his mother reached across the table and squeezed his hand reassuringly. “Whatever it is, I’m sure you’ll find a way through it. And if you ever need to talk, you know I’m here.”
Travis nodded, grateful for her understanding. “Thanks, Mum. I appreciate it.”
The rest of the evening passed quietly. The comfort of home gradually eased his worries, at least for a while. Later, however, as he lay in bed unable to sleep, his thoughts inevitably returned to Mia. He hoped she was all right. More than that, he hoped that whatever she was facing would not prove too much for her to bear alone.
Eventually, exhaustion overcame him.
The following morning, Travis found Mia waiting near the school entrance. The sight of her brought immediate relief, although something guarded remained in her expression.
They walked inside together, speaking about ordinary things at first. Gradually, the strain between them softened. By the time they reached the corridor leading to their classrooms, Travis felt more at ease. Whatever Mia was confronting, she appeared determined to handle it. He could only trust that she would turn to him if she needed help.
As they prepared to part, Mia gave him a small but genuine smile.
Travis carried that smile with him as he headed to class. It was not proof that everything was well, nor did it erase the uncertainty that lay ahead. But it reminded him that failure, fear, and disappointment did not have to be faced in complete isolation. Sometimes confidence began to return through something as simple as knowing that another person had not walked away.
For the first time since their argument, Travis felt a quiet sense of hope. Things were far from perfect, but perhaps Mia did not have to rebuild alone.
