Chapter 1: The First Absence

1. Mara Quinn woke to the sound of rain tapping against the window and the uneasy feeling that something was missing.

She lay still for a moment, staring at the cracked ceiling of her tiny apartment. The digital clock read 6:47 a.m. She reached for her phone — muscle memory — but her hand paused halfway.

Something was gone.

She sat up and looked around. On the windowsill, her collection of sea glass. Yesterday there had been eight pieces. Today there were seven. The smooth blue one — the color of her mother’s favorite sweater — was missing.

Mara searched the floor, under the bed, even in her slippers. Nothing.

She told herself it was nothing. People lose things all the time.

In the bathroom, she reached for the silver necklace she never took off — a thin chain with a crescent moon pendant from her mother.

Her fingers touched bare skin.

The necklace was gone.

By the time she left for work at the bookstore, three more small things had vanished:

• The name of her first-grade teacher.

• The exact taste of her favorite childhood candy.

• The street she grew up on.

Each absence left a tiny hollow ache behind her ribs.

That night, Mara sat cross-legged on her bed with a notebook. She wrote down everything she could still remember about her life. When she finished, she stared at the pages with tears in her eyes.

At the bottom of the last page, in small shaky letters, she wrote:

Day 1 of forgetting.

She closed the notebook and whispered into the dark:

“Please… don’t take anything else.”

But somewhere in the quiet spaces between raindrops, something ancient and hungry stirred.

It had only just begun.
