Chapter 1

~2 min read

Finn Harper stared out the car window as rain pattered against the glass. The winding road to Greenhollow felt like it was taking him to the end of the world.

“I don’t want to live here,” he muttered, hugging his backpack.

His mom smiled gently from the driver’s seat. “Give it a chance, sweetie. Grandma’s house is special. And the forest behind it is beautiful.”

Finn didn’t answer. He missed his old apartment in the noisy city. He missed his friends. Most of all, he missed feeling like he belonged somewhere.

When they finally pulled up to the old stone house, the rain had slowed to a drizzle. The building looked like something from a storybook — ivy climbing the walls, a crooked chimney, and a giant oak tree standing tall in the backyard like a guardian.

While his mom unpacked, Finn wandered outside. The grass was soft under his sneakers. He stopped a few feet away from the enormous oak. Its trunk was wider than three kids holding hands, and its branches reached high into the cloudy sky.

Something felt… different about this tree.

Finn stepped closer. He placed his small hand on the rough bark.

“Hello?” he whispered, feeling a little silly.

At first, nothing happened.

Then, very softly, like wind through leaves, a deep, warm voice answered:

“Hello, young Finn.”

Finn jumped back with a yelp and fell onto the wet grass. His eyes were wide as he stared up at the tree.

“Did… did you just talk?” he whispered.

A gentle rustling sound came from the leaves, almost like a chuckle.

“Indeed I did. I’ve been waiting for you.”

Finn’s heart raced. He looked around quickly to make sure no one was watching, then crawled closer on his hands and knees.

“Who are you?” he asked.

“I am the Whispering Oak. Keeper of stories. Friend to those with kind hearts.”

The boy blinked in amazement. “This is impossible. Trees don’t talk!”

“Most trees don’t,” the oak replied kindly. “But I am very old… and very lonely. Will you be my friend, Finn Harper?”

Finn thought about it. Back in the city, he was always too shy to make friends. But here, under the giant oak, something felt safe.

He smiled for the first time that day.

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll be your friend.”

A warm breeze swirled around him, and a single golden leaf gently floated down and landed in his open palm.

“Then our adventure begins,” whispered the oak.
